NEVER, never waste anything that has value. This is one of the best frugal lifestyle tips you’ll ever hear. If you’ve already acquired a product, use it until it is GONE before you replace it.
Use Every Bit of Blush!
Have you ever dropped a powder eye shadow or blush? The cake broke into a bunch of chunks and dust, and you wanted to cry at the loss, right? Did you know it is EASY to build that “cake” back into a usable solid object? I love Pinterest! You put all the salvageable chunks and dust back into the compact. Add a cap-full of rubbing alcohol, and stir with a toothpick. You’ll have to break up the chunks with the toothpick, and keep adding alcohol and stirring until you get a smooth paste. Then leave the open compact in an area where it can air dry. The alcohol evaporates and leaves a nice, hard cake of pigmented powder, and it is ready to use again. How much money could I have saved over the years with this tip?!
Use Every Little Smidge of Lipstick!
When you’ve used all the lipstick that will roll out of the container, you can use cotton swaps to dip into the tube and keep on using it. Or, you can make tinted lip gloss in a pot with the remaining amount! I pay about $12 tube for lipstick, and I don’t want to toss $1 worth into the garbage because it won’t roll up!
Treat Your Toothbrushes (and keep on using them)!
Have you heard that health tip that says you should throw away toothbrushes after one person gets sick to keep germs away? How about you just stick those toothbrushes into freshly boiled water and kill those germs? Another Pinterest suggestion is to soak the toothbrush for a couple of hours in white vinegar, then rinse and let dry. If the toothbrushes aren’t old and frayed, just clean them. You should replace your toothbrush every 4 months or so, but not because someone gets sick.
Be Tight with Toothpaste.
Toothpaste is another area of potential waste. How much toothpaste do you use? A whole brush-length? I use the amount of a large English pea on my toothbrush, and it cleans really well. I use an inexpensive brand of toothpaste that costs less than $1 per tube, but my family uses whitening, sensitive, blahblahblah toothpaste that costs over $5 per tube. I want them to be VERY cautious with that stuff and make it last!
Save the Soap!
I love Yardley Oatmeal and Almond Soap, and I buy it from Amazon because it is expensive here in Hawaii. When the bar in the shower gets really small, that sliver gets added to a sisal soap-saver bag in the shower to get every last possible use out of it. Using that sisal bag creates a nice thick lather, and I can use it as shaving cream. More savings! Here’s the kind I use:
Use Every Drop of Expensive Moisturizer!
I buy very high-quality skin care products from Aloette, and my moisturizer is expensive. The 1.7 oz container retails for $65, and it is worth every cent! You may say, “Rebecca, $65 is NOT frugal!” It doesn’t seem frugal, but stay with me. Further, I’m 52 now, and I need REALLY good skincare!
I started my first tube of Aloette Correction Code A.M. around January 1 of this year, and by late February, I was having to squeeze the container like a tube of toothpaste to get a pea-sized amount every day. I begrudgingly ordered my next tube, and whined about it to my niece. She said, “Auntie, just cut the tube in half and you’ll get days and days of moisturizer out of it.” She was so right. In the picture for this post, you can see my opened tube! I didn’t begin using the new moisturizer until March 30! I got a whole month’s worth of product out of the cut tube that I might have thrown away thinking it was empty!
So, here’s a little math for you: I’m getting 3 months of product out of a tube I thought would only last 2 months. Instead of buying 6 tubes per year (6 X $65 = $390), I’m buying 4 tubes per year (4 X $65 = $260) for a whopping savings of $130. That’s half a car payment! I love Aloette products – check them out (click on the picture below)!
