I absolutely LOVE Netflix! When we moved to Hawaii, we decided to give up network television. We have access to Amazon Prime, and we’ve had Hulu for a short time, but Netflix is our favorite. The problem (or the BEST THING EVER) with Netflix, is that you can watch episode after episode of your favorite TV shows without interruption! That’s called “binge-watching,” and it is a wonderfully awful thing. 🙂
Binge-watching Netflix can be quite addictive, and I sometimes have guilt. So, I’ve decided to do productive things at the same time. Here are my top 15 things to do while binge-watching Netflix.
#15 – Write thank-you-notes and prepare greeting cards.
Yes, it is an old-school thing to do, but it means a great deal to people to receive actual mail that has nothing to do with advertising or bills. Send somebody a card!
#14 – Pay bills and balance the checkbook.
I pay most my bills online, but some still require me to actually write a check. I like to keep my checkbook register up-to-date with weekly comparisons to online records. It doesn’t take long, and it doesn’t require my undivided attention, so it’s perfect for multi-tasking with a Netflix binge.
#13 – Place Amazon orders.
Amazon, eBay, and other online shopping can be done while watching Netflix. The difficult part of making Amazon orders is remembering all the things you need that you may not have put on your list. So, take the time to log in, and – while the entire family is binge-watching a show – add items to your shopping cart as they come to mind over the course of a couple of hours.
#12 – Work out! Do quiet exercises like sit-ups, pushups, planks, or yoga poses.
Before we moved to Hawaii, I had an elliptical machine to use while I watched HGTV, and that was a GREAT way to alleviate guilt. There’s no space for it here, but I can put down a yoga mat and sweat a little during the boring parts of my shows.
#11 – Backup your website.
Thank goodness my husband participates in this blog! He manages some of the technical aspects for me, with back-ups being the most regularly needed service he provides. It is critically important, but can easily be done while watching Netflix.
#10 – Do mending or hemming.
Yes – this one is old school. I have a sewing kit with multiple colors of thread, spare buttons, needles, and scissors. Through the week, if an item needs repair, there’s a basket to put it in. When I know I’m going to be sitting for any length of time, I grab my sewing kit and begin repairs.
#9 – Update your calendar, plan out family activities, etc.
Writing things down in an actual paper calendar and looking through days, weeks, and months on paper helps me with planning.
#8 – Jot down content ideas for the blog, map content, and create outlines.
When I have ideas for posts on the blog, I write them down immediately. I can’t focus enough while I’m watching TV to actually compose the posts, but I can outline them, map content, and plan future posts.
#7 – Make laundry detergent and cut dryer sheets into thirds.
If you’ve never read about this weird thing I do, here is a post about making laundry detergent.
This activity must be done in the kitchen, so I use my tablet to watch Netflix. I like to prepare several batches of dry ingredients at a time, so I can quickly make detergent as needed. Heating water on the stove and actually making laundry detergent takes about 30 minutes, but many things can be done between starting the process and finishing.
Dryer sheets aren’t terribly expensive, but I’ve found a third of a sheet functions just as well as a whole one. Each time I buy a box, I take a pair of scissors and cut a small pile at a time into thirds. I put them all back into the original box. For the price of 100 dryer sheets, I get 300.
#6 – Fold laundry and iron clothes.
Folding laundry is completely mindless to me, and this is a GREAT activity to accomplish during Netflix binges. Very few of our clothes require ironing, but this is another quiet activity to do while watching TV.
#5 – Prep veggies and make salad-in-a-jar for the week ahead.
Make-ahead meals are one of my favorite ways to save money and make the weekday meals easier. I like to prop up my tablet and watch movies while I wash and chop veggies, make salad-in-a-jar, or prep meals. Check out this post about making “salad-in-a-jar” for the week ahead.
#4 – Work the Facebook and Pinterest business accounts.
I can do lots of “likes” and “shares” on Facebook and lots of Pinning while binge-watching Netflix. I’m increasing web traffic and building the business at the same time!
#3 – Answer and write emails.
I want to be thoughtful and creative in my newsletters, but I can answer quick questions or send out welcome emails while I’m watching Netflix.
#2 – Plan meals for the week.
I have a free meal-planning printable I like to use, and I can easily fill it out while watching TV. Once I have the main course chosen for each dinner, I can spend time thinking about GREAT side dishes. Do you struggle with meal planning? Check out this post: A Cheat Sheet for Weekly Meal Planning.
#1 – Create pins for blog posts.
Now that I have a system for creating great graphics for Pinterest, all I have to do is come up with photography or colorful graphics for the “pin.” I can play with color combinations and lettering while binge-watching Netflix. I spend less than a half-hour on most of my pins, and they are bringing traffic to my blog.
